Tools You'll Need
Step-by-Step
Turn the switch OFF
Make sure the disposal switch is off. Never put anything in the disposal while it's connected to power.
Check for a jam
Look into the disposal with a flashlight. If you see something (utensil, bone), remove it with tongs or pliers — NEVER your hands.
Free the jam with the Allen wrench
Find the hex socket on the bottom center of the disposal. Insert the Allen wrench and rock it back and forth until the flywheel moves freely. This breaks the jam.
Press the reset button
Find the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. If it's popped out, press it back in. Wait a few minutes if the motor is hot.
Test
Turn on the cold water, then turn on the disposal. It should run normally. If it hums and stops, the jam isn't fully cleared — repeat step 3.
WHEN TO STOP
- If the reset button won't stay pressed in, the motor is still overheating — wait 10 minutes and try again.
- If the Allen wrench won't move the flywheel, the jam is severe.
- If the breaker trips when you turn on the disposal, there's an electrical fault — stop.
WHEN TO CALL A PROFESSIONAL
- The disposal is jammed and the Allen wrench doesn't free it.
- The breaker trips every time the disposal runs.
- The disposal body is cracked or leaking.
- The motor hums but won't spin even after clearing the jam and resetting.
