Garbage Disposals
Why Does My Garbage Disposal Hum?
The short answer
A hum with no spin means the motor has power but the flywheel is jammed — usually a hard object or debris. Don't keep running it; the motor can overheat and trip.
Common symptoms
- Humming sound when switched on
- Flywheel doesn't spin
- Disposal then trips off
Most likely causes
- —Jammed flywheel (bone, utensil, debris)
- —Seized impellers
- —Tripped internal overload
Safe things you can check
- ✓Turn the disposal OFF immediately.
- ✓Press the red reset button on the bottom after the motor cools.
- ✓Use a hex wrench in the bottom center socket to free the flywheel — never put your hand inside.
When to call a professional
If the flywheel won't free or the unit hums and trips repeatedly, the motor or bearings may be done — replacement is usually the call.
