Drains
Should I Use Chemical Drain Cleaner?
The short answer
Rarely. Liquid drain cleaners are corrosive, can damage older pipes (cast iron, galvanized), and usually just poke a hole in the clog — it comes back. They're also hazardous to handle and dangerous if they don't clear and a plumber has to open the line.
Common symptoms
- Slow or clogged drain
- Considering a bottle of chemical cleaner
Most likely causes
- —Grease and soap buildup
- —Hair and debris in the trap
- —Deeper line issue
Safe things you can check
- ✓Use a plunger first.
- ✓Remove and clean the P-trap.
- ✓Use a drain snake or zip tool for hair.
When to call a professional
If the clog returns after a proper mechanical clearing, stop repeating chemical treatments and have the line evaluated. Recurring clogs can come from persistent buildup, usage patterns, roots, a sag, damaged piping, or another restriction; a camera may help when appropriate.
