Why Does My Drain Gurgle?
Gurgling means air and water are interacting unusually in the drainage system. A local restriction, shared downstream restriction, venting problem, or trap/fixture condition can contribute. One affected fixture makes a local issue more likely; several fixtures reacting together points toward shared drainage or venting but does not identify the exact section by itself.
- Gurgling sound from a sink or tub after draining
- Toilet bubbles when the washer drains
- Slow drainage with gurgling
- —Partial clog in the trap or branch
- —Blocked or improper vent pipe
- —Main sewer line partially blocked
- ✓Try a plunger on the affected fixture.
- ✓Clean the P-trap under a sink.
- ✓Note if multiple drains gurgle — that suggests a bigger line issue.
If multiple drains gurgle, a toilet bubbles when other fixtures drain, or a lower fixture starts backing up, have the drainage system evaluated. A sewer camera may be useful if the drain line is accessible and passable, while venting problems may require separate inspection or testing.
