Garbage Disposal Anatomy

A closer look at how a garbage disposal mounts and connects — useful if you're dealing with a leak, jam, or drain issue.

Overview
A garbage disposal is a motorized grinder mounted under your kitchen sink drain. Food waste enters the grinding chamber, where spinning impellers push it against a stationary grind ring, breaking it into small particles that flush down the drain. Most disposal problems — jams, leaks, and no-starts — can be diagnosed with a few simple checks.
How It Works
When you turn on the disposal, the motor spins a flywheel with impellers. Food waste is pushed against the grind ring, breaking it into small particles. Water flushes the particles through the discharge tube and into the P-trap. If the motor jams or overheats, the reset button trips to protect the motor.
Key Components
Sink Flange
The metal ring in the sink drain opening. The disposal mounts to it from below.
Mounting Assembly
Locks the disposal to the sink flange. Twist the mounting ring to release.
Grinding Chamber
Where food is ground by spinning impellers against a grind ring.
Dishwasher Inlet
Side port for the dishwasher drain hose. Has a knockout plug for new units.
Discharge Tube
Carries ground waste from the disposal to the P-trap.
Reset Button
Red button on the bottom. Trips on overload — press to reset after clearing a jam.
Common Issues
Humming but not spinning
Jam. Insert an Allen wrench in the bottom socket and rock back and forth.
Won't turn on at all
Tripped reset button or dead outlet. Press the red reset button and check the outlet.
Leaking from bottom
Failed internal seal — the disposal needs replacement.
Leaking from top
Failed plumber's putty seal at the sink flange, or loose mounting ring.
Bad odor
Food buildup in the grinding chamber. Grind ice and citrus peels to clean.
Maintenance Tips
- Always run cold water when using the disposal — it helps solidify fats for easier grinding.
- Grind ice cubes periodically to clean the impellers and chamber walls.
- Never put grease, fibrous vegetables, bones, or expandable foods (rice, pasta) in the disposal.
- If it jams, use the Allen wrench socket at the bottom — don't try to free it from the top.
